LANSING, Mich. — Hazardous wildfire smoke continues to impact the Lansing area Friday as Michigan experiences what state officials say is the worst air quality on record, prompting event cancellations, health concerns, and accommodations for travelers across the state.
An Air Quality Alert remains in effect throughout both Michigan's Lower and Upper Peninsulas as smoke from Canadian wildfires continues to produce hazardous pollution levels. The poor air quality forced dozens of outdoor events to be canceled Thursday afternoon and evening, and residents are being urged to limit time outdoors, particularly those with respiratory conditions, children, and older adults.
To assist campers affected by the smoke, the Michigan Department of Natural Resources announced it will waive cancellation fees for overnight camping reservations at state parks scheduled between July 15 and July 19.
Cyclospora Cases Continue to Climb
Michigan health officials are also monitoring a significant increase in Cyclospora infections. As of Thursday, the state has reported more than 4,300 cases, including over 500 new cases since the previous update.
Meanwhile, multiple national media outlets report that federal investigators have identified iceberg lettuce supplied by California-based Taylor Farms to Taco Bell restaurants as a possible source of contamination. The investigation remains ongoing.
State Investigates Utility Response to Holiday Storms
The Michigan Public Service Commission has launched an investigation into how three of the state's largest electric utilities responded to severe thunderstorms over the Fourth of July weekend.
Storms beginning July 3 produced wind gusts between 60 and 70 miles per hour, knocking down trees and power lines across the state. According to the commission:
- DTE Electric reported approximately 387,000 customer outages.
- Consumers Energy reported about 276,000 outages.
- Michigan Indiana Power reported roughly 35,000 outages.
Many customers criticized the utilities for inaccurate restoration estimates and lengthy outages during dangerous heat and humidity. The utilities have until August 27 to submit detailed reports explaining their response.

Residents in the Elsie area could soon see a permanent home for their local fire department.
