Planned Parenthood is closing its Lansing health center as part of a broader reduction in services across Michigan, citing ongoing financial challenges. The Lansing clinic is one of three locations slated to close because of what the organization describes as unsustainable funding issues. Patients who previously relied on the Lansing facility will now be directed to health centers in Grand Rapids or Ann Arbor. Planned Parenthood is also closing its Livonia and Warren locations.

Driver Charged in Crash That Killed Two MDOT Workers

A 24-year-old DeWitt man has been charged in connection with a May crash that claimed the lives of two Michigan Department of Transportation workers from Mason.

Tyler Reck faces two counts of reckless driving causing death and two counts of moving violation causing death in a work zone following the fatal crash on northbound U.S. 127 near Holt Road. The victims were identified as 51-year-old Bruce Wagner and 49-year-old Steve Spenle.

Reck was arraigned Thursday in 55th District Court, where a judge set bond at $25,000. His next court appearance is scheduled for August 11 for a pre-examination hearing.

Road Closures Impact Lansing Drivers

Several construction projects are affecting traffic throughout Lansing.

Kalamazoo Street between Walnut and Capitol, along with Seymour Avenue from Cesar Chavez to Madison, are closed through October 31 for sewer construction. Meanwhile, Grand River Avenue between Howard and Newton and Saginaw Street from Clark to Foster have been reduced to two lanes through next Thursday for road repairs.

In addition, Washington Square from Shiawassee to Ionia will be closed from 7 a.m. Saturday until 7 a.m. Monday to accommodate the annual Moneyball three-on-three basketball tournament.

Student Bookstore Moving as Redevelopment Begins

The longtime Student Bookstore near Michigan State University will close its current East Lansing location on Sunday, making way for a new housing development recently approved by the city.

The business is relocating one block east to the 500 block of East Grand River Avenue, now known as Spartan Corner. The new location will focus exclusively on merchandise sales.

Whitmer Approval Slips Among Democrats

New polling from Emerson College shows a decline in Democratic support for Governor Gretchen Whitmer.

According to the survey, Whitmer's job approval rating among Democratic voters has fallen 17 points since April to 62 percent. The same poll found Abdul El-Sayed leading Haley Stevens by 15 points in Michigan's Democratic U.S. Senate primary, while Republican John James holds an eight-point advantage over Perry Johnson in the GOP gubernatorial race.

Unclaimed Lottery Prize Benefits Michigan Schools

Michigan's School Aid Fund will receive an unexpected $250,000 after a winning KENO! ticket went unclaimed.

The ticket was purchased in Belleville for the July 30, 2025 drawing, but the prize expired after the claim deadline passed Thursday afternoon. Under Michigan law, unclaimed lottery winnings are transferred to the School Aid Fund.
