Michigan State University is alerting students that Berkey Hall is temporarily closed Thursday while law enforcement investigates a potential threat.

According to the university's alert system, classes scheduled inside Berkey Hall will be held remotely for the day. MSU says there is no indication of a threat to the broader campus.

Meanwhile, Lansing police are investigating whether two deaths along the Lansing River Trail could be connected.

Police say a 57-year-old man was found unconscious Sunday on the River Trail in Old Town near Cesar Chavez Avenue. The man later died from his injuries. Investigators say his death could potentially be connected to the August 22 stabbing death of 22-year-old Daniel Lusk, who was also found along the River Trail near Michigan Avenue. The investigation remains ongoing.

In Meridian Township, police are searching for a person reported missing Wednesday near Okemos High School. Officers describe the individual as a 5-foot-9, 200-pound biracial male with facial hair. He was reportedly wearing a light-colored shirt, gray basketball shorts and bright blue shoes.

Mason Mayor Faces New Recall Effort

A new recall effort has been launched against Mason Mayor Russell Whipple over a recently drafted zoning ordinance that would restrict data center activity.

The first recall attempt was dismissed because of an error in the petition language. The Ingham County Election Commission is scheduled to review the new petition language September 18.

Hillsdale County Sheriff Pleads Not Guilty

Hillsdale County Sheriff Scott Hodshire pleaded not guilty Wednesday to charges of obstruction of justice and official misconduct.

Hodshire is accused of leaking information to a suspect or the suspect's family regarding an ongoing theft investigation involving a sheriff's office in Ohio.

Michigan Voting Measure Heads to Supreme Court

Michigan Attorney General and Solicitor General are asking the U.S. Supreme Court to reject a proposed citizens-only voting ballot measure that supporters are attempting to place on the November ballot.

The proposed constitutional amendment failed to qualify for the ballot following a deadlock last week by the Board of State Canvassers. Supporters of the measure are requesting a Supreme Court injunction, with the deadline for ballot language to be presented to the Secretary of State set for Friday.

Two Michigan U.S. Senate Debates Set

Michigan's U.S. Senate candidates will face off in at least two debates ahead of the November election.

Democrat Abdul El-Sayed and Republican Mike Rogers have agreed to debate October 21 in Detroit. The first debate is scheduled for October 8 in Grand Rapids.

Michigan Officials Warn Travelers About Firewood

As residents prepare to travel for Labor Day weekend, Michigan officials are reminding drivers not to transport firewood long distances.

The Michigan departments of Agriculture and Rural Development and Natural Resources say firewood is one of the most common ways invasive insects and plant diseases can spread to new areas.

Officials with Michigan's Invasive Species Programs and the Don't Move Firewood campaign are encouraging travelers to purchase firewood at or near their destination instead of transporting it across long distances.
