Lansing police are investigating reports of shots fired early Wednesday morning inside a home on Shepard Street near Kalamazoo Street.

Several roads in the area were blocked off as police responded. No additional details had been released by authorities at the time of the newscast.

Ricin Exposure Update

State health officials are allowing residents to safely reoccupy part of the Tyden Lofts apartment building in Hastings following a ricin exposure incident earlier this month.

Officials with the Barry-Eaton County Health Department say they observed what appeared to be castor beans in one apartment. Castor beans contain ricin, a naturally occurring poison. The apartment was evacuated last Thursday night.

Capitol Avenue Closing for Sewer Work

Lansing commuters are being reminded that Capitol Avenue is closing between Cesar Chavez Avenue and Kilborn Street beginning Wednesday for sewer construction.

The closure is expected to remain in place through November 13.

Funeral Services Held for Williamston Siblings

Funeral services were held Tuesday for two Williamston siblings who died after the bicycles they were riding were struck by an SUV.

Twelve-year-old Calvin Shepard died at the scene of the September 5 crash. His 13-year-old sister, KaraLee, died five days later from complications from her injuries, according to a Facebook post from the children's mother.

A fundraiser organized by the Lansing Michigan Stake of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints has raised tens of thousands of dollars for the family.

The 64-year-old Williamston woman driving the SUV remained at the scene. No arrests have been made and no charges have been announced. The investigation remains ongoing.

Michigan Sex Offender Registry Shrinks After Court Ruling

Nearly half of the people listed on Michigan's sex offender registry have been removed following a state Supreme Court ruling involving offenses committed before 2011.

Michigan State Police say approximately 20,000 people were removed from the registry, reducing the number of registered offenders from about 43,000 to 23,000.

Civil Rights Charge Filed Against Michigan Corrections

The Michigan Civil Rights Department has filed a formal charge against the Michigan Department of Corrections, accusing the agency of discriminating against and retaliating against a prisoner while he was on a religious fast.

The Department of Corrections says it disagrees with the charges. A hearing before an administrative law judge will be held at a later date.

General Motors and real estate developer Bedrock are seeking $548 million in tax breaks and other public subsidies over 30 years as part of a proposed $2.2 billion redevelopment of Detroit's Renaissance Center and East Riverfront.

The 31st annual Michigan BluesFest gets underway Wednesday night in Lansing's Old Town District.

Indoor concerts are scheduled Wednesday and Thursday at UrbanBeat before the festival moves outdoors Friday and Saturday, with three stages planned for the weekend.
